There has been a time in all of our lives where we stand in front of the mirror and let out a gasp because of the dark circles that have somehow appeared under our eyes.

Maybe you always got a good night’s sleep and had a healthy balanced diet, but those dark circles somehow still managed to show up. This is because lack of sleep or too much computer time aren’t the only reasons your eyes are now underlined.

A lot of people just say that sleeping properly will reduce dark circles but sometimes it’s just not possible to constantly get proper sleep. Also, lack of sleep isn’t the only reason people get dark circles. 

They can be caused by skin irritation, stress, aging, and even oversleeping. You could either choose to follow customized skin care routines or buy products that help decolor dark circles. Here are 7 tips that can give you a headstart while dealing with those dark circles that just don’t go away:

  1. Cool as a cucumber

A very famous scene in movies or TV shows is people at parlours with cucumbers over their eyes. 

Cut the cucumber into thick slices and place them to cool in the refrigerator for about half an hour. Apply them to your eyes and leave them for ten minutes. Then remove them and wash your eyes with cold water. 

Cucumbers have antioxidants like cucurbitacins that will work wonders on your dark circles. They also have skin-lightening properties and have mild astringent benefits.  

  1. Rose water

As kids, we were often told that we should rinse our eyes with rose water if they were tired. Rose water also makes the skin fresh and has astringent benefits. 

Rose water works almost as well as a toner. All you need to do is place rose water soaked cotton eye pads over your eyes for about 15 minutes. Doing this twice for 2-3 weeks will definitely help. 

  1. Jojoba oil

Buy a bottle of jojoba oil to treat those pesky dark circles. It fixes the skin under your eyes layer by layer. 

Apply the oil under and around your eyes and massage for a minute or two. Sleep with it overnight. 

The oil has a rejuvenating power which improves the colour around the eyes. It strengthens and nourishes the skin under your eyes and this nourishment leads to your dark circles slowly vanishing. 

  1. Lemon juice and honey

Lemon has actually been recognized as a very effective remedy to dark circles. 

Lemon juice has Vitamin C which works great as an anti-oxidant and actually brightens the skin under your eyes/ 

Just use a cotton swab and apply lemon juice under the eyes. After 10 minutes, wash it off. 

There is one problem, the lemon makes your skin dry. So, applying moisturizers after will ensure that you get rid of your dark circles and still have refreshed skin. 

Adding honey to the mixture adds the detoxifying properties of honey to the mixture. Add 1 tsp of fresh lemon juice and ½ tsp of honey. Follow the same procedure as above and rinse with cold water.

  1. Skin lightening creams

Do you think these home remedies are not the solution for you?  In that case, there’s always the option of skin whitening creams. 

These creams can reduce the amount of melanin in the skin and thus make the skin around your eyes lighter. 

However, make sure that you don’t use creams that have bleach since they’re harmful for your skin. 

6. Cut back on salt

Excessive sodium can cause your body to retain water. The retained water makes your body look bloated. The way sodium causes other parts of the body to swell or bloat, it’s not really a best friend to the skin under your eyes. 

If your diet is otherwise healthy, your dark circles or under-eye bags can be caused by high sodium levels. Cutting down on salt can help you reduce dark circles. 

Also eat potassium rich foods so that your body can achieve and maintain a proper sodium- potassium balance it needs. 

7. Soak tea bags

Tea is already the solution to all of life’s problems and now its the solution to one more. Teas that contain natural tannins have long been used to deal with dark circles or puffy eyes. 

Soak two tea bags in a cup of warm water and the chill the bags for a few minutes. 

Place one tea bag on each eye and keep for five minutes. Your eyes will be refreshed and caffeine may help your blood vessels narrower which constricts the blood vessels. This remedy works well with green teas and black teas. 

8. Potato skin

Potatoes aren’t just kids’ favourite snack. They’re slowly rising up the ladder of remedies for dark circles.

Potatoes have vitamin A and vitamin C. These vitamins work together and brighten and hydrate your skin. The starch and other enzymes present also help to brighten the skin around the eyes and reduce dark circles. 

Cut a raw potato into slices and freeze them overnight. Place them over your eyes for about 10 minutes once every day. 

The catechol present also reduces puffiness around the eyes so the best time to do this is early in the morning so your eyes can keep fresh throughout the day. 

You can also use pure potato juice. Soak cotton balls in chilled potato juice and keep them over your eyes for 20 minutes.  

8. Argan oil

The best thing about argan oil is that it gets absorbed very easily. Argan oil has antioxidants and vitamin E which both work well to heal the skin tissues around the eyes. 

Argan oil has also been known for reducing fine lines and wrinkles. All you need to do for best results is apply argan oil every night before sleeping.

Take a few drops of argan oil on your ring finger and apply it under your eyes. Do not wash it away and tap or massage it till it gets absorbed into your skin.
